He served in the 1st Sikh War and the 2nd Sikh War before commanding a column in the Black Mountain Expedition 1852-53. In the Indian Mutiny he was adjutant-general to Sir James Outram and defended Lucknow during the second siege. He then took part in the Central India Campaign. In the 2nd China War Napier commanded part of the expeditionary force under Sir James Hope Grant.
