Summary

The French under Joseph-Francois Dupleix sought to increase their influence in the Carnatic by making alliances with native princes. They supported one claimant to succeed as Nizam of Hyderabad and the British countered by supporting another faction.

Robert Clive rose to prominence when he reversed the ailing British fortunes by attacking Arcot and won a series of victories. Following the Treaty of Pondicherry, Mohammad Ali became Nawab of Arcot and a powerful ally of the British. Dupleix retired to France in disgrace. The British gained supremacy in the Deccan at the expense of the French.
