During the British period Kohat was the headquarters of Kohat District in Punjab (before 1901) and later in North West Frontier Province (1901 to 1947).
History
In 1873, a third class municipality was established consisting of 16 members.
Historical events
Mollie Ellis from Kohat cantonment was kidnapped by Afridi tribesmen from the Khyber Pass region on 14 April 1923. The rescue expedition included Mrs Lilian Starr, matron at the Peshawar Mission Hospital. For more details see:

- "The amazing story of Marie Memsahib" by Dr Raheal Ahmad Siddiqui January 25, 2015 The News on Sunday, now archived. Marie Mallam, the wife of Lt. Colonel G.L.Mallam of the IPS (Indian Political Service) from 1934 lived in Kohat where her husband was Deputy Commissioner. The Mallam Welfare Centre in Kohat for Maternal and Child Welfare was the first of other similar clinics and she was awarded the Kaiser-I-Hind silver medal. She died in 1944, age 40.
