1715 raised as Phineas Bowles's Regiment of Dragoons
1751 became the 12th Regiment of Dragoons
1768 became the 12th Prince of Wales's Regiment of Light Dragoons
1816 became the 12th (The Prince of Wales's) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (Lancers)
1817 became the 12th (The Prince of Wales's) Royal Regiment of (Light) Dragoons (Lancers)
1861 became the 12th (Prince of Wales's Royal) Lancers
1921 became the 12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's)
1960 amalgamated with the 9th (The Queen's Royal) Lancers to form the 9th/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's)

In 1884 due to the return of the 13th Hussars to England, 2 privates transferred to the 12th Lancers ^[1]
