Chronology
- 1688 raised as Lord Cavendish's Regiment of Horse formed by regimentation of troops raised earlier in 1688; known until 1751 by the names of six other colonels
- 1690 ranked as 9th Horse; also known 1691-93 as Duke of Leinster's Regiment of Horse
- 1746 ranked as 4th Horse on Irish Establishment; also known as Black Horse
- 1751 formally titled the 4th Regiment of Horse
- 1788 renamed the 7th (The Princess Royal's) Dragoon Guards transferred from Irish to British Establishment and named for Charlotte The Princess Royal
- 1921 renamed the 7th Dragoon Guards (Princess Royal's)
- 1922 amalgamated with 4th Dragoon Guards to form 4th/7th Dragoon Guards
- 1935 became 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards
- 1992 amalgamated with 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards to form The Royal Dragoon Guards
