Summary

The Third Anglo-Mysore War (1789–92) was between Tipu Sultan ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore and the Madras Presidency of the British East India Company. Tipu invaded Travancore on 29 December 1789 and Lord Cornwallis declared the opening of hostilities on 27 January 1790.

General William Medows was appointed to command the British forces but waged an ineffectual campaign in 1790 eventually being recalled to Madras. Cornwallis took control of the Company forces in January 1791 fighting a series of actions culminating in the Siege of Seringapatam. The Treaty of Seringapatam on 18 March 1792 arranged the payment of £3 million by Tipu and the ceding of Malabar and Palghat to the Company.
