The station at this town, opened 1873, was the terminus of the Mettupalaiyam Branch Line which was a branch from Podanur Junction on the Madras Railway which became the South Indian Railway broad gauge (BG) 'Jalarpet-Mangalore Mainline'
Here there was a connection to the Nilgiri Mountain Railway for onward travel to Ootacamund
