Hyderabad State Railway

Hyderabad State Railway was the description given in 1871-72 to the original system of railways to be constructed with funds provided by the Nizam. The system included :-

• broad gauge 5 feet 6 Inches(BG) railway under construction from Goolburga to Hyderabad.
• Also narrow gauge lines from Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Warrungal in a north-easterly direction to join the Chanda coal fields
• And a narrow gauge line from Warangal in a south-easterly direction towards the coast at Masulipatam .

• The broad gauge 5 feet 6 Inches(BG) from Goolburga to Hyderabad. Goolburga has not been identified but must have been Wadi Junction on the [[Great India Peninsula Railway. When it opened in 1874 it was called the Nizam's Railway - see separate page .
• The narrow gauge line described was constructed as a BG extension opened 1874 from Hyderabad to Secunderbad and formed the Wadi-Secunderbad Railway- see separate page.
• The further extension described to Warrungal was constructed by the successor ‘Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway’ as a BG line and opened in 1886 as part of the Hyderabad Main Line- see separate page.
• The Chandra Coal fields described were not accessed by the ‘Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway’. These coalfields were part of the Jharia Coalfield Development - see separate page and accessed from the eastern direction.
• The narrow gauge(NG) line from Warangal in a south-easterly direction towards the coast at Masulipatam. This line had first been proposed as the Masulipatam and Hyderabad Tramway/Light Railway but was not developed until 1915.
