Coimbatore was annexed to the Madras Presidency in 1799 after the defeat of Tipu Sultan in the 3rd Mysore War. It was the capital of Coimbatore District during the British period.
The station at this town was on the Madras Railway which became the South Indian Railway broad gauge (BG) 'Jalarpet-Mangalore Mainline'.The major railway junction of Podanur, with a railays workshop, was situated four miles to the southeast.
