During the British period Kohat was the headquarters of Kohat District in Punjab (before 1901) and later in North West Frontier Province (1901 to 1947).

History

In 1873, a third class municipality was established consisting of 16 members.

Historical events

Mollie Ellis from Kohat cantonment was kidnapped by Afridi tribesmen from the Khyber Pass region on 14 April 1923. The rescue expedition included Mrs Lilian Starr, matron at the Peshawar Mission Hospital. For more details see:
