Tarikere-Narasimharajapura Tramway

The Tarikere-Narasimharajapura Tramway was a 2ft/610mm narrow gauge(NG) line, completed in May 1917; owned and worked by the Mysore State Railway. The line linked Tarikere to Narasimharajapura, a length of 27 miles(42km) [1].

Tarikere was a station on the Birur-Shimoga Railway, metre gauge(MG) branch line which was worked by the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway(M&SMR) [2].

The tramway, with a length of 27 miles was reported still operational in 1948 [3].

Associated Tramway

The Tarikere-Narasimharajapura Tramway worked in conjunuction with the Tadasa-Hebbe Tramway , a 2ft/610mm narrow gauge(NG) line]], also owned and worked by Mysore State Railway; sanctioned for construction in August 1917 [1]; commissioned on February 5, 1921 and closed 1949[4] . The Tarikere-Narasimharajapura Tramway had seven intermediate stations, including Tadasa where there was a junction with the Tadasa-Hebbe Tramway [5].

It is assumed that the two tramways shared common locomotives and the records show details of the locomotives, passenger carriages and wagons [5].

Closure of the two Tramways

As a result of the construction and opening of theLakkavali Reservoir and irrigation project on the Bhadra River ( Bhadra reservoir) [6] the line was closed to traffic on 1 Jan 1949 [5] and Narasimharajapura lost its connectivity when the project was taken up [4] .
