The Bhavnagar State Railway (BSR) was formed and built by the Princely Bhavnagar State as a Metre Gauge(MG) railway. The line, which opened in 1880, joined with the Gondal State Railway and connected Bhavnager to Wadwhan, a length of 121 miles(195km).
The 'Bhavnagar-Gondal State Railway' became an administative coalition between 'Bhavnagar State Railway' and '[Gondal Railway|Gondal State Railway]' and was formed in 1881.
This railway was also described as the 'Kathiawar Railway', the 'Kathiawar Union Railway' and the 'the 'Kathiawar State Railway' - see separate page
When the Junagadh to Verval railway joined at Jetalsar the coalition briefly became the 'Bhavnagar-Gondal-Junagad-Verval Railway'(BGJPR)' and lastly when the extension to Porbandar was completed finally became the (BGJPR) - see separate page for further information.
The administrative coalition was dissolved in 1911 with the constituents going their independent ways. The Bhavnagar State Railway (BSR) was formed under the administation of the Bhavnager Durbar. [1]
For some years after 1911, the BSR also worked the Dhrangadra Railway.
In 1948 the BSR was merged to form the Saurashtra Railway
