Alexander Muirhead CIE (1859-1935). His son Charles Alexander Muirhead CIE (1888-1967) was also in railway service in India.
Educated at a Private school in India. At the age of 18, joined the superior service of a mercantile firm of good standing, as an Assistant.
Railway Achievements
- Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway] (O&RR) Company, date and employment unknown, in their Lucknow headquarters. From 1889 O&RR was bought out by the Government of India and became a State line.
- South Indian Railway (SIR), dates unknown, appointed as Assistant Traffic Superintendant; promoted Traffic Superintendant.
- Southern Mahratta Railway (SMR), date of appointment unknown, Traffic Manager; c.1896 "The Traffic Manager’s carriage on the South Mahratta Railway. Alexander Muirhead with wife, family and staff" [1]
- Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR), 1897 Oct, appointed General Traffic Manager [2];
- Great Indian Peninsular Railway Volunteers, 1902 Feb, resigned his commission as rank of Major

- South Indian Railway (SIR) 1911 Jan, appointed Agent SIR; 1911 Dec, Delhi Durbar, awarded Companion of the Indian Empire CIE [3].
- Indian Railway Conference Association 191? Meeting. Delegate as South Indian Railway Agent [4]
- 1919, returned to the UK to join the 'Home Board' of the SIR as a Director.
- 1923-35 ?, South Indian Railway 'Home Board', Chairman and Managing Director [5]
- 1923-35 ?, Pondicherry Railway 'Home Board' Chairman of the Pondicherry Railways.
