Chronology

  • 1694 raised as Viscount Charlemont's Regiment of Foot
  • 1698 disbanded
  • 1701 raised again as Viscount Charlemont's Regiment of Foot also known by the names of eleven other colonels until 1751
  • 1751 became 36th Regiment of Foot
  • 1782 became 36th (the Herefordshire) Regiment of Foot
  • 1881 united with 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment of Foot, to become 2nd Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment
  • 1970 amalgamated with The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) to become Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment
  • 2004 amalgamated with the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment and the Staffordshire Regiment to form the new Mercian Regiment

Service in British India

India 1863

In 1863 the regiment embarked for India. They served in Lucknow, Peshawar and Rawlpindi, mainly as a presence rather than engaged in military action. The regiment returned to England from Bombay arriving back on 18th December 1875. In Hereford Cathedral it is recorded that, during the service in India a total of nine officers, seventeen corporals, two drummers and 307 privates died. The majority of deaths were from cholera[1]

London : Mitchell & Co., 1883. This link advises in 2003, Golden Valley Publications produced a limited number of 30 copies (facsimile) of both the original book and its appendix in one book with a hardback cover (ISBN 0-9542578-3-9).

The Green ’Un was published regularly from November 1922-March 1927, but there were some earlier editions
