The East Indian Railway(EIR) owned and operated an extensive network of railways of broad gauge(BG) - 1962 miles/3157km (1905); 2775 miles( 4465km) (1918)
The EIR also managed, worked and maintained a number of mixed gauge lines on behalf of other parties.
The listings below are generally based on the “Administration Report on Railways 1918” [1] with page numbers (and pdf pages) noted at the end of each entry.
In 1918 the total length of line being worked as the EIR system (both owned lines and managed/worked lines) was 2775 miles(4465km) opened plus a further 8 miles(132km) under construction or sanctioned for construction. Page 53 (pdf 62)

- South Bihar Railway, formed 1895 as private company, Luckeeserai to Gaya, 79 miles(127km) opened 1899, leased to the State to be worked as part of the EIR network. The railway was taken over by the Government of India(GoI) in 1906.
- Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway(O&RR), formed from Indian Branch Railway(IBR); nationalised, 1889; merged into EIR, 1925.

- Nalhati-Azimganj Railway, opened 1863. Originally part of Indian Branch Railway(IBR), unique 4ft gauge; worked by O&RR, 1863-72; run as State Rly, 1872; leased to EIR, 1892.
- Sheoraphuli-Tarakeshwar Railway, opened 1885. Branch line opened by the Tarkessur Railway Co.; worked by EIR.
