Overview

The Madras Army was one of the three Presidency Armies of the East India Company. It had its origins in the garrison of the Madras settlement formed in 1665. There was a major reorganisation in 1795 as follows (see History of the Madras Army Vol II p 280):

  • Cavalry: 4 regiments of 6 troops
  • European Infantry: 2 regiments of 10 companies
  • Native Infantry: 11 regiments of 2 battalions of 8 companies
  • Artillery: 2 battalions of 5 companies

A further reorganisation in 1824 resulted in:

  • Cavalry: 3 regiments
  • European Infantry: 2 regiments
  • Native Infantry: 52 regiments and 3 local battalions
  • Horse Artillery: 1 European and 1 Native brigade
  • Foot Artillery: 3 regiments of 4 companies
  • Pioneers: 2 corps

In 1859, following the Indian Mutiny, the armies were restructured when India was brought under the control of the British Government. The Madras Army ceased to exist when the official Indian Army was formed in 1895.
