The early railway companies were UK companies operating in India. Later the British Government of India (GoI) owned the majority and either managed them directly or leased them back to private management. From circa 1925 most railways were both managed and owned by the GoI. The railways in India were subject to constant changes of ownership, amalgamations and adjustments over the years.

*Guaranteed Railways included thpse railway companies, formed by 1859, to which the East India Company, later the GoI, guaranteed a fixed return on capital.
At present (Spring/Summer 2021) we are working on further updates to this list by adding new information and references from many different sources. The aim is to make as much information as possible available on all aspects of the railways in India from the first beginnings in the 1840's through to partition in 1947.

*Only two Un-guaranteed Railways were ever formed and both were re-constituted by 1870.
We have extended the number of Railways identified and now include Tramways, Monorails, Industrial lines, Rail/River ferries, Railway Constructions and Railway Equipment Manufacturers. The current number of pages is over 1,750 and this will be further extended. The results of an 'on-line' search of the  Indian Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library have been added to each appropriate Railway page and these have provided many new sources of information that are currently being reviewed. We are also uploading detailed information on the hundreds of Industrial Railways in India up to 1947.

*State Railways were those where the GoI exercised its right to assume ownership (which it did gradually from 1860 until 1907). From 1907, the word State was usually dropped from the name of railways owned bu the GoI . In 1944, all the State Railways were nationalised.
We have also created a Railway People section where that person made a significant contribution to the early development and  operation of the railways in India, we have cross referenced these to the appropriate Railway page.
FIBIS Fact File #4: Research sources for Indian Railways, 1845-1947, is a comprehensive listing of over 330 names and this will, in due course, be revised. It does contain invaluable advice on tracing 'Researching ancestors in the UK records of Indian Railways' with particular reference to the Indian Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library. It is important to bear in mind that railway staff records created in India before 1947 remain in India, as do the records of railways built, owned or operated by the Indian Princely States. The records that survive today in the collections held at the British Library do so because they were originally created in the UK.

At present (Spring/Summer 2021) we are working on further updates to this list by adding new information and references from many different sources. The aim is to make as much information as possible available on all aspects of the railways in India from the first beginnings in the 1840's through to partition in 1947.

This Fact File is available from the Fibis shop
